LNYC Great 48 Regatta Report

District:

The Flying Scot Great 48 Regatta at Lake Norman Yacht Club is always a fun regatta and a great place to race sailboats. Regatta chair, Carol Sandke, ensured that this year was no exception. Thirty-one Scots signed up which included several multi-time national champions in the Scot fleet and other fleets. Friday night’s welcome dinner included open taps and tasty tacos.

Saturday's weather forecast included thunderstorms, but we got off the 1st race on time in southerly winds of 6-10 mph.  After about an hour postponement ashore, to allow a few thunderstorms to roll through, the second race got underway. Those pesky thunderstorms came back and race two was shortened at the gate (after 2 of 4 legs) to get the competitors back ashore to safety. The competition was tight with a 3-way tie for 2nd place between Bruce Kitchen, Brent Barbehenn, and Tim Porter.  Dave Rink led with 2 bullets. Marvelous margaritas and amazing appetizers came out at 5:30 along with some great drone footage of the racing.  The burnt ends/brisket and baked chicken dinner was just as delicious as the cheese cake and key lime pie. We topped off the evening with a Kentucky Derby pool that Donna Graham won, in the winner-take-all pot!

Sunday was lighter air with breeze from the SW at 4 to 6 mph, shifting constantly,  dying and then rebuilding.  A typical light air lake sailing day! In the end, LNYC member Tim Porter and Robbie Lowrance tied with the two-time Flying Scot national champion, David Ames and Lia Kumar.  However, David had it figured out on Sunday using a borrowed boat with borrowed sails. He, convincingly, won both races and won the regatta in a tie breaker with Tim.
