FLYING SCOT TRIFECTA 2014

2014 Gulf District Trifecta

Once again wind forecasts were incorrect.  All of the “best” websites for forecasting winds on Lake Pontchartrain were wrong.  All had predicted light southerly’s the entire Memorial Day weekend of the Gulf District Trifecta.  And all weekend we wound up with 8-12 knot northerlies for the 5 race series.  But at least there was no rain!

On Memorial Day weekend of 2014 Flying Scot Fleet 96 and Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans hosted the first Gulf District Trifecta.  It was a Trifecta as the Flying Scot Class (also the largest class in the event) sailed for three different perpetual trophies as part of the 2014 Juby Wynne Memorial Regatta: The Commissioner General Trophy, the Charles L Dees Memorial Trophy and the Cock-of-the-Walk Trophy.

What was unique is that each of these trophies had its own individual criteria within the Flying Scot class, although everyone started together and sailed the same course.

2014 Allen M. Douglas Award Recipient

2014 A Douglas Award

The Flying Scot class is well known for being a close group of sailors, really good sports who step up to help each other when needed.  At the Midwinters each year, we like to acknowledge an individual who demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship at the event.  This prestigious award is in honor of Allen M. Douglas, a long-standing member of the Flying Scot class who gave a great deal to the class.  This year’s winner received the award for giving up a day of racing so her husband Dave could crew for another skipper whose crew had become ill and was unable to sail that day.  While she minimizes this by saying she was able to have a great run, sit in the sun, have some great soup and just relax and enjoy the day, we all think this was a great gesture and she deserves this award.  She is truly a generous person who always makes herself available to help whenever anyone needs anything – you don’t even need to ask.  Congratulations to Florida District's Kim Thinel from Davis Island Yacht Club for being the 2014 recipient of this award.
