Centerboard

While sailing, I attempted to lower the board as usual, but it would not lower more than 1/4 of the way. There was nothing preventing the wheel from turning and the line was slack? After a dozen times raising and relowering it finally went 3/4 down. Other than a frayed gasket on the bottom, is there another explanation? NEVER had this problem in 7 years with this boat.

Maybe there is a problem with the washers on the centerboard drum. I had a similar problem for some time with the center board not going down all the way and finally took the drum assembly apart and replaced the old washers and now it works fine. The washers were rusty and worn and the drum was binding against the tabernacle. R. Lewis FS367 Chin up

The centerboard can bind if the cable winds on the spindle towar

The centerboard can bind if the cable winds on the spindle toward the drum. That tends to tighten the drum against the tabernacle, thereby restricting the free action of lowering the centerboard. Check how the cable is winding up. If it heads for the drum, "train" the cable to wind away from the drum. FSSA Forum editor

Thank you. I think the binding was the issue. gasket will be replaced however.
