FS Midwinters - Two Venues?

What say you fellow Scot sailors about having two, and only two venues for the Flying Scot Midwinter Championship Regatta? Consider this. Even years the regatta is held at St. Pete YC, as it is now. Odd years hold FS Midwinter at a club, say in the panhandle of Florida. By alternating the regatta between two, and only two clubs, for FS Midwinters, the class could enable more people to participate by bringing the event location 10 or more hours drive closer to different parts of the country (Kansas, Okloahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Louisianna, more...). By alternating between two clubs, the Midwinters is on a predictable schedule and lends releif to host clubs with an obligation to host only every other year. What do you think? The event held at St. Pete has only been there about 5 years. Before that, it stayed for well over 20 years at St. Andrews Bay YC in Panama City. Used to be a wonderful event in ALL categories, but I understand in the final few years the quality of Race Committee suffered to the point that FSSA felt compelled to pull out. Too bad, as there really is no finer sailing venue in Florida at that time of the year than at St. Andrews Bay. Other locations in the panhandle? Well Pensacola certainly comes to mind. It wasn't the quality of the RC at St.Andrews, it was the quality of the racing when the US Coast Guard would not let them use a course that crossed the main shipping channel. The RC was forced into one side of the bay and in the prevailing breeze the race became a drag race out to the left layline after a pin end start. After that each race became a parade around the buoys.

Thanks for correcting my mis-information. I had heard this 3rd hand and wondered myself how the RC could have gotten bad after so many years of doing a great job. I do NOT understand the issue from the Coast Guard. Having sailed in 6 Midwinters, I never saw very much ship traffic in the bay. Sloop John B.

I think some of it has to do with 9/11. Regardless, I would consider attending future Midwinters if they were closer to CT. On second hand, if they are held in Pensacola or somewhere near there, I would certainly be there. Cheers! Mark FS 5516 Don't Panic
