TackTick Compasses

Do those of you that use the TackTick compass, use it in the Tactic Mode? I find the Tactic Mode way too inaccurate and can't tell if the 7 degree change I see is due to the compass or the wind. I bought the darn thing for the tactic mode and find I can't use it. If you use it, please tell me how?

Follow the TackTick thread from November 10th. I describe partially what the tactics mode is intended to do, and how to interpret the number it displays. Hot Wheels add some good considerations, as well. You can adjust the numbers of degrees which will cause the tactics mode display to change. I think the default is 5 degrees. If you want it to be finer than then, check the manual to find out how to adjust it. (As I remember, without my compass handy to check,you press the mode key until you are in tactics mode. Then, you quickly press the set and modes key simulatneously. Then using the set or mode key individually you can adjust the "change notification" angle up or down. Leaving the display idle for a while will save the value you set. Tactics mode is only telling you that your heading has changed, it does not tell you whether the cause is wind velocity, wind shift, your steering, or whatever. Your pre-race study of wind conditions could indicate whether you should expect oscillations. If you don't have that information, the best approach may be to see if the number on the tactics display persists. For example, if you are on starboard tack and the number on the starboard side display decreases (or goes from >=0 to <=359) you can think a header has occurred because of a loss in velocity, or a wind shift (but not your steering, of course). If you're convinced that the reason is a wind shift, then tack!!! Hope this helps. FSSA Forum editor

Why would anyone want to use anything other than the CONTEST Tactical compass? I'll take an analog display any day over a digital. Same thing with my countdown timers -- with an analog display, you can "visualize" the remaining time much easier. And during a countdown, that is the only thing of importance. Sloop John B.

Heck, I tend to use regular compass mode all the time.

Heck, I tend to use regular compass mode all the time. ...truth be known, I bought the TackTick because it has nice BIG numbers on the display. -Michael
