recoring alternatives

Is there an alternative material to balsa wood for recoring a Scot? I need to repair the aft section from CB trunk to the transom. Some other types of newer boats are using a closed cell foam for a core and say will last longer that balsa wood.[?] S. Lolly S. Lolly FS882

There is no core alternative allowed by the class rules, they specify 1/2 inch balsa. Properly installed and maintained to remain dry, the balsa will last a very long time. It is also fairly easy for a "Do it Yourselfer" to tackle the job, but it is messy.
