Outhaul

I've read that some recommend getting rid of the block in between the clew of the main and the aft end of the boom. What do others think? Does it help significantly with extra room to tighten the foot of the sail to flatten it? If so, how does one position the block to the side?

Sorry not sure I understand what you mean.....I do not have that on my boat.

I have external outhaul that uses a block between the end of the emainsail foot and the aft end of the boom in order to increase purchase. Th eouthaul sheet then goes to another block mounted on the side of the boom for further purchase. I have read that some think it is helpful to get rid of the block between the clew and the end of the boom because it takes up space that could be used to tighten the foot further in strong air. I hope that clarifies. So I am wondering if anyone has experience with that out there and there opinion of it.

The block gives you extra mechanical advantage, although it does take up space. I would recommend that you call Flying Scot Inc. and describe to them how your outhaul is set up. They have kits packaged with everything you need, including detailed installation instructions.

FS Co didn't think it was a concern about the block. They offer the external outhaul or internal wire.

I would only be concerned if the block kept you from extending the clew sufficiently to get the foot to change to the shape you are wanting. I've seen boats with it, and without. The owner that did not have the block said that it interfered with the foot tensioning sufficiently to the sail shape he wanted. dave boling Huntsville, AL FS3431

Get the internal outhaul kit from Flying Scot Inc.

Get the internal outhaul kit from Flying Scot Inc. That will eliminate the block yet give you the mechanical advantage and the full length of the boom. However, if you are needing the full length, it sounds as if you mainsail may be seriously stretched out at the foot. Bob New FS 5143 Merritt Island Florida Fleet Captain Fleet 179
