boom vang

I am just learning my way with the boom vang. Out in 12-18 knot winds with a 6 to 1 purchase. Couldn't budge the vang and it was far from overtightened. Is the vang supposed to be able to be tightened while sailing only only during a tack? Please advise.

Frank: I had a vang that I could get very little tension from, when I bought my boat. I re-rigged it with a cascading vang, that gives 12:1, I think, with a Ronstan T-cleat mounted on the CB trunk. This allows me to tighten easily while sitting out on the rail. This made a huge difference in control upwind in heavier wind. I works great. Check it out on my boat, which sits at Nockamixon. It is currently at home for a new trailer bearing after a long trip. Phil Scheetz FS 4086

Frank: Here is a picture of Kelly and Heidi Gough at the NAC with the boom vang tensioned. It gives you an idea of how far a boom can bend. You need to ease this tension as you round the weather mark, or you have a good chance of breaking the boom. http://sims.myphotos.cc/~wave16/2007/flyingscottNA07/flyingNA07_web/sour...
