Boat Speed with a painted bottom

Im buying a used Scot. The bottom has been painted and appears to be in need of a little work. Should I try to remove the bottom paint back down to the gelcoat or sand and repaint the bottom. Thanks

Will you be dry sailing the Scot? I would say if you are remove the old paint and wet sand the gelcoat with 400 grit........Since I keep my Scot in the water dockside, I wet sanded the gelcoat to 400 and put on VC 17 , a Teflon based anti fouling paint....It is very slick and has a very thin film thickness.....The VC 17 is alot slicker than any of the ablative kinds of paint like Micron CSC.........Steve Ungberg
