Reefing the Main

I have searched the posts [ed. see the old forum] about reefing the main and still have a couple questions. I want to single hand this winter and have a 2nd Main that has reef points sewn in. Is it as simple as having several short lines to tie it off on the boom or am I missing something?[ed. posted by jakr...@mindspring.com ] FSSA Forum editor

A jiffy reefing kit is available from FS Inc. which takes care of the concerns mentioned on other posts. It also works well for single-handing. The sail does need to be modified but it sounds like yours may be all set. Check with FS Inc. They can send you a drawing of how the jiffy reefing is set up on the Scot. To prevent ripping your main, make sure the clew at the end of the boom is securely fastened to the boom and I suggest using very weak cotton string on the intermediate ties along the boom or better yet NO ties along the boom. I have repaired many a Main where the clew reef line came uncleated or broke and the next tie down the boom assumed a load the sail was not designed for and it ripped BIG TIME right up the middle of the sail.
