Florida District Championship wraps up in Tampa

The weekend promised to be lovely for the last regatta of the Florida State Series. We were looking forward to being warm again, for the first time since the Eustis regatta!

After a couple of false starts, the first race was underway in light winds out of the Northeast. The lead changed several times. Every place changed several times. No place was safe in either of the first 2 races. It was said, it seemed like everyone had their own wind (or not). The wind was very patchy and light, and somewhat frustrating as the races progressed.

After the 2nd race, we thought we might be done for the day, the wind seemed to be turning off. While the race committee was resetting the course, a surprise was building from the West! We were discussing plans for when we returned to land, when suddenly, we had to shift gears (put down the beer) and start hiking because white caps were coming! During the 3rd race, Robbie had the win in the bag, but the next 5 places were really tight! The competition was tough at this regatta, and folks brought their A-game.

Dave Bell and Susan Cintron and other helpers prepared some satisfying dinner. Good times. Quite a day of racing.  Chris Morgan and Monica are in first place after a good day today, but the next several places are up for grabs….to be determined tomorrow….

Day 2

More beautiful weather on tap for today, the national weather folks said it was going to be great for the whole country, and we were not disappointed. It's still chilly in the morning, but it has warmed up nicely with the sun.

Well, this was it, the last day of the last regatta of the State Series. All titles are on the line (as a wise one once said)!

The wind started light, and we believed Sailflow's report that it went to zero. Trying to go upwind in the3rd race, it certainly did… go… straight… to… zero.

Chris ended up maintaining his lead, Paul and Leslie showed up with some great sailing today for 2nd place, and Mark won the tiebreaker with the Pig for 3rd.

Overall, in the state series, though, the Pig prevailed! Yay.

A parting limerick and haiku for good measure…

We gathered in Davis Island series finale

February 2010

Lake Eustis Florida District Regatta

There were 28 boats registered for the fifth regatta in the Florida District Championship. As with the previous years racing on Lake Eustis the conditions were trying and had to frustrate everyone on the water, the only question is how many times. The weather was beautiful but the breeze was light Sunday and really light Saturday. Three races were sailed each day and one was thrown out.

Amy and Jeff Linton were untouchable and scored a solid victory and won four of the six races. Congratulations!! We had a nice showing from the Rudder Club in Jacksonville; Donna Mohr, Todd Stickley, Rob Smith and Oscar de la Torre all made the trip. The Tampa fleet made the usual good showing with six boats and strong finishes. The Sarasota fleet sent the ever youthful Jeff Penfield and restoration king Ron Pletsch showing off the new/old FS15 with its new glistening black paint job. Last but not at all least is the out of state gang; Harry Carpenter, John Kreidler, Tom Lawton, John Wake, Joe Brake, Larry Klick, Bronson Bowling and Hunter Riddle (Pensacola is almost out of state) Thanks to you all for coming down and special thanks to Hunter and Shurr Sails for sponsoring the two day clinic prior to the regatta.

January 2010

Stuart/Jensen Beach Florida District Regatta

The fourth regatta for this season at the US Sailing Center in Jensen Beach. This is the second time we have held a District Championship here and once again the RC and all volunteers did an awesome job. They hold many major regattas here and their expertise is unmistakable.

Also unmistakable is Robby Brown's sailing ability with two up in some breeze. Dean Bell, sailing with two crew gave Robby a good run for the money on Saturday but came in one point down. The rest of us lightweights were following them around. No complaints though since the temps were in the high 70's, breeze was strong and steady, RC excellent and we are sailboat racing in January!

We returned to shore Saturday to find race results already posted and the grill warming up! How cool is that?! A few beers, burgers and dogs later and it was time to pack up. Almost everyone decided to drop the rigs since the overnight forecast was calling for storms with wind gusts to 60 a possibility. Better to take some precautions rather that finding your boat on its side in the parking lot.

There was some wind overnight but nothing severe but Sunday morning saw plenty of rain. The radar showed a squall line which was moving quickly and looked like it would clear out in an hour or two. After a short postponement we all launched and made our way to the course in rapidly improving conditions. A southwesterly was filling in nicely and we saw 10 - 15 knots and clouds giving way to sun. This allowed three more races to be sailed easily before the time limit. Robby Brown continued his ways and scored an easy win, his second of the season!! We were second and Todd Stickley from Jacksonville was third.

December 2009

Gator Bowl/Florida District Regatta

The Rudder Club was the scene for some chilly weather and fun sailing as 16 teams braved the elements this past weekend. Early in the week the weather forecast was pretty good, mostly clear with highs near 70 and all that. With the passing of each day came a new forecast that was cooler and wetter. UGH! The steady rain Friday and Saturday morning gave way in time for the noon start Saturday. We had a light breeze, in the 5 to 10 range to start which built as the afternoon went on. By the fourth race it was very gusty and shifty especially up near the weather mark which was fairly close the the western shore and it's tall tree line. There were a couple of capsizes but recovery was swift and without assistance or bailing. A bunch of us were trying to reel in Jeff and Amy Linton but with not much success, they won all four races!

We all enjoyed some nice home cooking courtesy of Donna Mohr and her army of volunteers. The only downer was witnessing the defeat of the FL Gators in the SEC championship football game.

Sunday was clear and cold, 39 degrees, according to the local TV news. Two more races were scheduled for a total of six which would bring a throwout. This was especially important for Jeff since he was called OCS in the first race on Saturday. There was a nice northerly Sunday so getting in two races was a snap, in fact with the short-ish course we were done by 11 am. Good news for the travelers among us. Congratulations to the Lintons for a fine showing and first place, very impressive sailing! Joe Brake and John Wake teamed up and sailed a nice regatta and well deserved second place. Third were Harry Carpenter and Bill Ross were on their game and showing off a a sweet new boat with a light blue deck. This one is for sale folks so if you want a sharp new boat this could be the one for you.

Thanks to everyone at the Rudder Club who did a fine job once again this year.

Sarasota District Regatta

Sarasota Sailing Squadron once again hosted a spectacular regatta for Round 2 of the Florida District Championship series. If you sat this one out, you really missed a winner.

Brisk, gusty easterlies warm water and sunshine greeted the fleet Saturday morning, but a forecast for increasing winds unfortunately discouraged some people from attending. Our usual fleet of nearly 30 boats dwindled to only 13 entries, and less than that number actually ended up sailing. Several crews split up to sail with others, as a 3-man crew was certainly an advantage to everyone but the winner. Conditions Saturday were a consistent 16 knots gusting to 22, which tested the skills and stamina of the sailors.

Brilliant race management by PRO Allan Broadribb gave us 3 exciting races and had all of us in off the water by 4pm Saturday. Robbie Brown and Bill Icely schooled the fleet in the art of de-powering a Scot, scoring two bullets and a deuce. Jim Egan unfortunately broke his boom before the first race, but returned to race the third, and score a bullet! Ron Pletsch, sailing with star crew Barry Milborn and Bob Twinem on board hit some fabulous shifts, and sat in a solid second after Saturday’s races. John Domagala enjoyed a refreshing swim when the jib sheet broke on Jim Egan’s boat as he was hiking off it. Likewise Susan Domagala also had a swim off Strammers’ boat when they suffered a capsize in the 3rd race. We all relished a gourmet dinner of Chicken Marsala, headed home and fell asleep in front of the Gators’ game.

Sunday the start was scheduled for 10:30 and the breeze was blowing a delightful 12 knots when we left the dock. By start time it was increasing and by the end of the race, gusts were picking up and there were threatening clouds over downtown. Robbie and Bill again showed the way, followed by Jim Egan, crew Richard Elsishans and John Domagala with Marsh Pardey and Chuck Tanner in third. RC elected to call it a series as the wind increased, and Chris Morgan capsized then had trouble righting the boat in the increasing gusts. We retreated back to the club, to enjoy the leftover Chicken for lunch and award prizes, an original painting by our fleet star and last year’s champ Jim Egan, with prints of the painting as second through 5th place prizes. Robbie and Bill ran away with first, but Ron Pletsch just edged out Marsh Pardey for second by one point. Great racing, fabulous Florida weather, gourmet food, and wonderful prizes were enjoyed by all who braved the winds of fall.

Thanks to Lainie Pardey for the report!!
