In Pennsylvania we have Lake Arthur in Pittsburgh and Pymatuning Yacht Club. In Kentucky we have Cave Run Sailing Association in Morehead. And in Maryland we have Deep Creek Lake, home of our builder Harry Carpenter in Oakland.

The District Governor is Martha Sweterlitsch from the Hoover Sailing Club fleet. The Ohio District is also home to FSSA Immediate Past Commodore Charles Buffington and Amendments Chairperson Dan Goldberg.

2015 Buckeye Regatta - Hoover Sailing Club, Westerville, OH

The Flying Scot Buckeye Regatta was sailed May 16-17 at HSC with 17 boats, a high for recent years.   The weather gods were not cooperative but the sailors were intrepid and raced three races in pouring rain on Saturday. At 5:00PM hot showers were more popular than the appetizers.

There were 9 off-the-lake boats unless you count HSC former Commodore Jim Cottle's brother in law, Jack Markwick from Illinois,  as a Hoover Boat since his crew were Jim and HSC Interlake sailor Alan Freeland. Ohio district clubs represented included Cowan Lake, Berlin and Deep Creek. While the hardware left the lake, Hoover comported itself well with Ray and Scott Trask coming in fourth and Stephanie Bahr and Marty Sweterlitsch at seventh. Scott, age 16, grew up in the fleet literally and is a champion Opti sailor who crews for his dad, Ray.  Sandy Phalen skippered her first regatta and gave us more to celebrate.

Greg Shafer, the Fleet Captain from Deep Creek, and Mark Shaefer ( no relation)  took first place followed by Bruce and Lynn Kitchen from Cowan Lake and FSSA President Frank Gerry and wife Marianne from Clinton Lake, Illinois. As usual Fleet 37 threw a good party with prize winning lasagna prepared by Karen DeLong for dinner.

Former FSSA President and Chief Measurer Don Hott dies at age 95

                F29Hott    2015Hott

This week, the Flying Scot community is a little sadder for the loss of long-time Scot sailor Don Hott, who passed away Sunday, May 3, at age 95.  He is a founding father, a former Chief Measurer and former President of FSSA who sailed in the first 50 NACs.  As Harry Carpenter said "We lost one of the really good guys with the passing of Don". Harry had crewed for Don in the first NAC Harry ever attended at Riverside in 1973.  Don was also a founding member of Deep Creek Yacht Club and the members there will miss him dearly.

Our thoughts are with his dear wife Charlotte and his family as they go through this difficult time.  We will always owe a debt of gratitude to Don and it was an honor to have known him.
