2015 NAC at Bay Waveland in MS - Day 1 of Qualifiers

With race scheduled for 1:00 PM, we were not hopeful when there was nothing by noon.  So we sat at the dock or on shore waiting to see what would happen.  It was 95 degrees or higher and lots of water and Gatorade was being consumed. There was some speculati0onthat we would not be going out at all today.  But after a short postponement, we saw the sea breeze coming in from S/SW and we all headed out about 12:30.

Jim Tichenor and his Race Committee ran two flawless races, one 4-leg W-L and one 5-leg W-L in 10-12 MPH wind which ran fairly steady throughout the day.  The second race was set a bit longer since there enough time to run a longer race with the conditions.  The breeze kept us cooler, but we still needed lots of hydration while racing.

With 49 boats on the line, split into 4 divisions, we race 3 qualifiers and sail against each of the divisions.  When the qualifiers are done, 1/2 the boats sail in the Championship Division and 1/2 the boats sail in the Challenger Division in the finals.  After Day 1, the top 5 are Jeff Linton, Red Steiffel, John Dane, Andrew Eagan and Jake Horowitz.  One more qualifier tomorrow and we move to finals on Wednesday.  See results to date here.

2015 NAC at Bay Waveland Yacht Club in MS - Women's and Juniors

While registration for the finals continnued and boats were still being weighed in and measured, there was lots of excitement on the water with the Women's and Junior's NACs being raced.  It was a wonderful sight with 8 Women's teams and 11 Junior teams out there fighting every minute for their places.  We were very pleased to see so many teams out there today!

It was easy off the dock and we were off the wind out to the race course which was right out in front of the club.  It was in the high 90's and it felt like over 100, so staying hydrated was key.  The bay had very little so we did not have to fight that all day, and with the steady wind, we were never left floating out there in the hot temperatures.

WIth a nice steady S/SW sea breeze the Race Committee was able to get started on time at 1:00 pm and had us back in by 4:00 PM, after 3 great 4-leg W-L races.  At the end of a wonderful day on the water, the winner of the Women's NAC is Shelley Caplan, a local sailor from Bay Waveland Yacht Club.  The winner of the Junior NAC was Drew Hayward from Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, FL.  Congratulations to them both!

Junior's results are here.  Women's results are here.

Fifty boats are registered for the 2015 NAC at Bay Waveland Yacht Club in Mississippi.  Arrivals continued throughout the day on Saturday 6/20, with boats being measured and checked in.  One boat (above) got a new mast after a 40MPH gust took out the old one a week ago at a regatta.  The Women and Juniors have their turn tomorrow, with the rest of the skippers getting out there on Monday when the qualifiers start.  Good luck to all the participants - the competition is fierce!
